Mawson the hero, explorer and geologist. This program at the South Australian Museum is linked to the Australian Curriculum:Science strand Earth and Space Science. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 investigate the displays about Sir Douglas Mawson and his role as a ‘hero and explorer’ in Antarctica as well as learning about how sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks are formed. Students interpret the displays and discover how scientific knowledge changes as new evidence becomes available eg. the theory of plate tectonics.
Prior knowledge
Investigate how rocks and minerals are formed and prior knowledge about Mawson and Antarctica.
